Sterling Silver vs Gold Plated Jewellery: What to Know
What 925 sterling silver and gold plating really mean, how each wears, and which to choose.
Product listings are full of terms like 925, sterling, plated and vermeil. Here is what they mean and how each wears.
What is 925 sterling silver?
Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, which makes it strong enough for jewellery. It is marked 925. It has a bright, cool white shine, and with time it can darken a little, but it polishes up easily.
What is gold plating?
Gold plating is a thin layer of gold applied over a base metal such as sterling silver. It gives the warm colour of gold at a lower price. Because the layer is thin, it can wear away gradually, particularly on rings and on pieces that rub against skin or clothing.
Which wears better?
- Sterling silver is solid all the way through, so scratches and tarnish can be polished away.
- Gold plating keeps its colour well with gentle use, but it cannot be polished and will eventually thin where it is rubbed most.
Choosing for your daily jewellery
For rings you wear every day, silver is the practical choice. For earrings and pendants, which see less friction, gold plating can last well with care. If you are unsure, our care guide shows how to look after both.
Shop by metal
Most of our pieces are sterling silver, such as the Corin crown ring, with gold-plated options including the Amara pendant necklace and the Dara choker necklace.
