Moissanite Engagement Rings: A Buyer's Guide

Choosing a moissanite engagement ring: settings, stone shapes, size and what to look for before you buy.

A moissanite engagement ring gives you a large, bright stone without a diamond price tag. With so many styles available, it helps to decide a few things before you start looking.

1. Pick a setting

  • Solitaire: a single stone on a plain or pavé band. Timeless, and it lets the centre stone do the work.
  • Halo: a ring of small stones around the centre makes it look larger and adds sparkle.
  • Eternity: stones set all the way, or part of the way, around the band. Often worn as a wedding band or stacked.
  • Crown or cathedral: raised prongs or arches lift the stone and show off its cut.

2. Choose a shape

Round brilliant is the classic and gives the most sparkle. Oval elongates the finger and looks larger for its weight. Emerald and radiant cuts show clean lines and flashes of light, while pear and marquise are more distinctive.

3. Think about size

Moissanite is sold by its measured size as well as carat weight. A 1 carat round moissanite is about 6.5mm across, a 2 carat about 8mm. Choose a size that suits your hand and your day-to-day life: larger stones sit higher and can catch on clothing.

4. Check the metal and finish

Sterling silver is bright and affordable, though it needs a little care to stay shiny. Gold plating adds warmth but is a thin layer that wears over time. See our guide to sterling silver vs gold plated jewellery.
