How to Care for Moissanite and Sterling Silver Jewellery
Simple habits to keep moissanite sparkling and sterling silver bright: cleaning, storage and what to avoid.
Moissanite is a hard, durable stone and sterling silver is easy to look after, but a little care keeps both looking their best for years.
Cleaning moissanite
Oils from your skin, lotions and soap film are what dull a stone, not wear. To restore the sparkle:
- Soak the piece in warm water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, getting behind the stone where dirt collects.
- Rinse in clean warm water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Keeping sterling silver bright
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver, and it tarnishes slowly when it meets air, moisture and some chemicals. A soft silver-polishing cloth removes light tarnish. Store pieces in a dry place, ideally in a sealed pouch or small bag, to slow it down.
Look after gold-plated pieces
Gold plating is a thin layer, so avoid abrasive cloths and polishes on it. Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth.
What to avoid
- Chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs, bleach and strong household cleaners.
- Wearing jewellery in the shower, the gym, or while gardening and cleaning.
- Putting perfume, hairspray and creams on after you have put jewellery on. Apply them first, then dress.
- Throwing pieces together in a drawer, where they can scratch each other.
Check settings occasionally
Every few months, look at the prongs holding the stone and check they are secure. If anything looks loose, stop wearing the piece and have it looked at.
